Just been asked to give a 5 minute presentation for a position with Kaplan (test prep/tutoring). Very nervous regarding topic to choose to speak on. Any suggestions for how/what to pick for the topic, looking toward the "keep it simple, stupid" side of things but also searching for the item that will allow me to put my best professional foot forward. Below are the exact requirements:
At the auditions you will be asked to give a five-minute teaching
presentation to Kaplan staff and fellow auditioners. (We will stop
you after 5 minutes.) Interaction with the audience is required. You
will need to prepare a presentation in advance, on the topic of your
choice. Choose a topic with substance that is both interesting and
interactive. Please do not lecture for five minutes; Kaplan
classrooms are interactive ones, and we expect the same from your
presentation.

We recommend that you make preparing your audition more fun by
choosing a topic you find interesting. Do not choose topics that
focus on physical demonstration, such as origami, juggling, and the
like. You should imagine that you are presenting in front of a group
of students, not in front of a group of your peers.

Any assistance you or your group could provide would be most appreciated.

Sincerely,
Daniel Farr

Daniel

It sounds like you have a nice challenge. The trick here is to pick either a topic that you both know confidently and also one that can be nicely demonstrated.

In a similar presentation I picked photos of two famous explorers "Rober Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton" I asked the audience if they recognised these characters and when they didn't get them I offered a couple of clues." This made the class more interactive. I then asked what leadership qualities they possessed and after calling out the three answers I wanted - I then put up three slides with the leadership qualities.

I love the saying of Happy Computers
"Tell me and I will forget,
Show me and I will remember
Involve me and I will understand"

Limit yourself to no more than 5 slides. Remember that you should not have to use all your slides.

The secret to contolling your nreves will be to practice. Work out when the event is and work back to when you need to start the practice sessions. Try the presentation out on a real audience, your family or friends are a good start.

Good luck.

Default Job interview/presentation

I need to make a 2 minute presentation at my job interview. I am applying to a kids camp. The presentation could be telling a joke, doing a performance or anything of that sort. My brain is dead. I can't make anything up. I am not good at telling jokes, so jokes are out.... can you help me?

A good idea would be something that a kid could make in two minutes.

Origami is a great fallback, you could make a paper plane or something like that.

Another good topic - particulalry for a kids camp would be do somethink like "5 essentail knots" take in a piece of rope and show the most common knots - reef knot, granny knot, slip knot, round turn and two half hitches, clove hitch.

Failing that you could show a couple of things that you can make with lego.

The real secret is to rehearse things in advance and if you get stuck in mid performance always have you backup (in true Blue Peter fashion) of here's one that I prepared earlier.

You could also buy a kids craft kit - and prepare one in advance. There are a set of kits available at www.kidzcraft.co.uk

I hope this helps and let us know which topic you choose
